Sekishu Washi Kaikan (Sekishu Washi Center)

To this day, the Furuichiba area of Misumi, Hamada is a region that continues to preserve the traditional papermaking techniques and skills that have been used for years. Sekishu is also the only papermaking community in all of Japan to have its own ocean view.

The Sekishu washi techniques, best represented by the Important Intangible Cultural Heritage Sekishu-banshi, have continued to be preserved by the craftsmen who live in Misumi. Unfortunately, many of the important craftsmen in the area have passed away during the last few years, and currently there are only four washi manufacturing locations in the area.

Sekishu Washi Kaikan, which opened in October 2008, was created with the intent of teaching Sekishu washi skills and techniques to the next generation. The facility was also created as a center for providing information concerning washi throughout Japan and information about international exchange, as well as a development center for original washi paper and products.

Furthermore, there are plans to strengthen partnerships with organizations that grow the materials used for washi, such as the Kozo Growers Association, in order to ensure high-quality, locally-grown materials.

Sekishu Washi Kaikan is a community-based facility, featuring a studio, where visitors can experience the entire Sekishu washi-making process. There is also an exhibition room, displaying washi created by members of the Sekishu-banshi Craftsmen’s Association and the Sekishu Washi Cooperative.
